Tools of the trade
The gem-finding process involves pouring small amounts of mud into a sifting pan, rinsing away the mud to reveal any "hard matter," discarding chunks of quartz, sediment and other "junk rock" and rubbing what remains in a circular motion until most traces of dirt are removed. At this point the goods are inspected for evidence of gems, notably unusual colours, textures and heaviness. |
