Everything we found, with a penny for scale. The second-largest gem, a 12.5-carat ruby, will likely be the feature stone of Marla's ring.
Ruby & Sapphire Facts:
- Sheffield Mine is one of only two sites in the world (the other is in Burma) to boast the "star ruby," a ruby which, when cut, displays the outline of a six-pointed star.
- A "ruby" is actually a red or reddish sapphire; sapphires come in all colours. Sheffield Mine's rubies aren't the bright red colour we normally associate with rubies, but range from purple to purplish-red.
- Once cut, the large rubies we found will be reduced to about one-third of their original size.
